VTF Richmond

What is World TeamTennis?
WTT is co-ed teams competing in a format that consists of 6 no-ad sets. One set each of men's and women's doubles followed by men's and women's singles, ending with 2 sets of mixed doubles. Total games won from all sets determines the winner. Substitutions and coaching are allowed during the match.

For more detailed rules about WTT, please visit our Virginia tennis website: http://www.virginiatennis.org/richmond

What is a WTT team?
A team must have two men and two women, as a minimum to complete a full match Ten (10) players maximum are permitted on a team roster. This allows for periods of rest and missing matches. Teams are responsible to have enough players in order to play all lines for all matches. If teams are short players(s) rule number one is to recruit more players or contact the League Coordinator/players looking for teams list.

Who can play?
Adults (18 & over) may sign up as a team or as an individual. All levels from 2.5-5.0 players can play. See below if you need to remind yourself how teams can be formed with different ratings.

There is a possibility of a JUNIOR WTT event or league. Stay tuned.

When do leagues start?
We are currently halting play and registration due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Please stay tuned and we will announce spring leagues when it is safe to do so.

You can also email Rob at rob@virginiatennis.org before you register and your team can be created that way. You will be notified when your team has been created. It is the responsibility of the captain to notify their team mates to register and assign themselves to the correct team.

Season: April 17-June 13 (8 weeks)
Matches can be scheduled on Friday or Saturday. Captains should let the league know their preferred night.
Teams must have a home club. No matches will be scheduled at public parks/schools (i.e. Belmont)

What Divisions (levels of play) are offered?
The levels of play being offered are 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 AND Senior(50+) 3.0,3.5,4.0. Depending on the number of teams, divisions can be combined.

PLEASE READ THE RULES BELOW HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR TEAM RATING. If you do it correctly, a higher rated player can play on a lower division (i.e a 3.5 player can play on a 3.0 team, as long as the team rating stays at 3.0). Also, once the team rating as been determined and approved (you would hear from me if it wasn't), anyone can play together.

Determining Team Rating
The average NTRP rating of the top two men and top two women players on your team determines the team rating.

       Example:
  Joe- 4.5 Mary- 3.5
  Tom- 4.5 Jill-3.5
  Bill- 4.0 Gail- 3.5
  Joe- 4.5 Mary- 3.5
  Jim- 3.5 Joan- 3.0

The best two men and two women are: 4.5 + 4.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 = 16. 16 divided by 4 equals 4.0.

This team could register for the 4.0 division or a higher division. A team consists of a minimum of two men and two women. Although the limit to the number of team members is ten, the suggested number of players is three men and three women. Click here to determine your NTRP level.

Where do we play?
When you register your team, be sure you can play at your home club. If you are an independent team you need to find a home club who can guarantee court time for matches.

I will contact the club rep/captain before I create the schedule to get blackout dates. Keep in mind a blackout date is when the club/facility courts are not available, not the players availability.

Can I register as an individual/substitute/team?
You can register as an individual or email me if you are looking to join a team. I will make every effort to find an existing team for you to join or create a new team if several individuals are interested. I will communicate to everyone there are players looking to play. Captains can email if they need more. The individuals looking for teams can also register and I will create a "team" players looking.

Note to substitute players:
There are no substitute players. All players need to register and pay.

Why register via the Internet?
You are not an official league participant until you have registered online. When you register via the Internet site you will be e-mailed league information during the season and your WTT Member Benefits (WTT Point of Contact Newsletter, discounts on hotel, rental cars, 2 for 1 tickets, plus more).

What is the cost?
League fees are $35/player.

League winners qualify for a National Qualifier?
Winning teams advance to the WTT National Qualifiers. Your team is eligible to participate in a NQ for up to one year from the end date of your league. For every four (4) teams in any official World TeamTennis (WTT) local league division, one (1) team will be eligible to participate in a NQ. Click here for more details.

Local League Information & Rules:
1. Please download a WTT scorecard and read over the rules for the league. This can be found on the Virginia Tennis Website (see contact info below).

2. Inclement weather/postseason play: if it rains or there is any postseason tournament, teams have 14 days from the scheduled date to get it played. If it rains again, the timeline begins again. Home team should offer at least 2 or more dates for any reschedule. Teams need to email the opposing team and the League Coordinator by the Monday before their match if not earlier.

3. Self rated players need to be approved. If you had a USTA rating in the past, that will be your rating. If you never had a USTA rating, you will be evaluated. I will contact the captain and the player.

4. There will be meetings scheduled before the season begins. The captain or a representative of the team is required to attend. I further recommend that any player new to WTT should attend as it does help clear everything up. Meeting times and venue will be announced in advance.

5. Winning teams will be invited to attend a national qualifier. For every 4 teams, one team will be invited. Players are required to play in 2 different matches to be eligible for the NQ. See above to read more about NQ's.

6. Matches are not timed, unless the home team captain tells you before the match begins.
